Going into the final competition, Greybull Blue was leading the pack of Academic Challengers. Alas, the mighty faltered in the last round allowing the Basin 2 team to slip ahead, relegating Greybull to the position of runner-up.
The 30th annual Big Horn Basin Knowledge Bowl was held in Worland on December 7 as nine teams from around The Basin competed for bragging rights, medals, scholarships and an enormous traveling trophy.
The five schools representing the region included Burlington, Meeteetsee, Riverside, Worland and Greybull.
Playing for Greybull Blue were Felix Weese, Dane Gifford, Matthew Dillon & Alex Havener
The Greybull Gold team was comprised of Elliot Robertson, Samantha Nighswonger, Jacob Gifford, Annie Fitzsimmons and Calder Forcella
Play at the competition was comprised of five rounds consisting of 60 questions each. Teams of four competed in four oral and one written round to determine scores based on numbers of questions answered correctly. Rounds 1 and 2 were oral, round 3 was written and rounds 4 and 5 were again oral competitions played with buzzer systems.
It was tight competition through-out the day. After recovering from a slow start, Greybull Blue took the lead in the second round, holding it through the next two as Burlington and Riverside trailed closely. Calculating their lead, Team Blue went into the final round ahead of Riverside by four and Burlington by five.
In the last round Riverside 2 answered 25 questions correctly, more than doubling the score of Greybull Blue’s 12 and securing the victory. Burlington 1 earned 16 more points to close in on second place but came up just short.
Capturing their seventh straight title, Riverside came out on top with a final score of 118 to Greybull Blue’s 108. Burlington 1 came in third with 107 points.
