Dominating their competition, Greybull grapplers had a busy weekend with three duals in two days as they faced Thermopolis, Lovell and Rocky Mountain on January 5 and 6.

On Thursday, Greybull took on Thermopolis at home, and then on Friday, they hosted the Big Horn County Duals Championship. The BHCDC saw a three-way dual take place, as Greybull wrestled Lovell and Rocky Mountain, before Rocky Mountain and Lovell faced off.

“There actually is no real placing in a dual. Either you win or you lose,” said Coach Mark Sanford. “We won all three. [And it] was a big win over Lovell. They didn’t have their full lineup, but it shows that we can beat them.”

Coach Sanford cited several wrestlers for outstanding efforts.

Individual highlights included Chris Ogg’s (FR) pins against Thermopolis and Lovell and Luke Zeller’s (JR) pin over his Lovell adversary. Nathan Hetzel (SR) had a win over an opponent he lost to earlier, and although Jesus Burgos (SO) had close lost a match to his Thermopolis opponent, he showed great improvement as a young wrestler.

While the competition of wrestling takes place on a more individual level, each member’s hard work contributed to the success of the team.

“We had a great team effort,” said Coach Sanford. “Even guys that lost by not getting pinned kept [the other teams] from scoring bonus or extra points.”

As the season has progressed, so have the skills of the athletes.

“We got better on our feet and started many matches with a lead. We have worked hard on our takedowns both on offense and defense,” said Coach Sanford.

However, there are a few areas where Coach Sanford says the wrestlers have some work to do to increase their odds of success.

“We need to improve on the mat. Staying in control and turning people will make a big difference in matches, [along with] being more explosive off the bottom.”

Although coming off of three big wins bolstered the team’s confidence, the wrestlers will be tested at Regionals.

“It will take a full team effort on our part,” said Coach Sanford. “The top three teams are on our side of the state, so Regionals will be tough.”
